What Is Bracket Daily Fantasy Sports?

Bracket daily fantasy is a knockout-tournament format for fantasy sports: draft a roster, face one opponent head-to-head, and advance through the bracket by winning your matchup — the way playoff brackets work, applied to daily fantasy.

The format in one paragraph

Every contest is a tournament bracket. It starts with a live draft: everyone in the bracket picks players from the same pool, on a clock, in a real-time draft room. Each round, your roster is scored against exactly one opponent's. Win and you advance to the next round; lose and your run ends. The last managers standing — and in well-designed structures, a large share of everyone who makes a deep run — win cash.

How it differs from traditional DFS

In classic salary-cap daily fantasy, your lineup is thrown into a pool with thousands of entries, many of them from professional players entering hundreds of lineups at once. Skill matters, but volume dominates: a casual player's single entry is competing against an industrial operation. Bracket DFS removes the volume game. One roster, one opponent, one round at a time — everyone in the bracket drafted from the same player pool under the same clock, so the competition is the drafting and the head-to-head calls, not entry count.

How it differs from pick'em

Pick'em apps ask you to predict individual player stat lines — more or less than a projected number. It's simple, but there is no roster, no draft, and no opponent; you are effectively playing against the house's projections. Bracket daily fantasy keeps the parts of fantasy sports that made it a game between people: drafting a team, setting a lineup, and beating the manager across from you.

Why brackets change the economics for players

Tournament fields in traditional DFS typically concentrate the prize pool at the very top — the top 1% takes most of it. A bracket pays by how far you advance, which spreads outcomes: on Shotgun Fantasy, payout structures are built to reward the top 40% of contestants. Combined with algorithm-balanced brackets that match you against peers at your level, the practical result is that an average player wins meaningfully more often.

What it looks like in practice

On Shotgun Fantasy, brackets run as 7-day or 30-day mini-seasons. You join a public bracket or spin up a private one with your own rules and stakes, draft live, talk trash in the built-in chat, make lineup adjustments and tactical trades mid-matchup, and advance round by round. The full flow is on the How It Works page, and common questions are answered in the FAQ.
